Rosie

This is my paint horse Rosie from a personal photo. I originally made this a sepia duotone print but is seemed garish to me even after I stitched it so I bit the bullet, had it reprinted as black and white and massively stitched it. I stitched the eye twice on the first one, this eye is perfect. Practice does pay off.

WRT

This is a business photo of my dad. I was going to recycle a business suit as the background but it fought me to the point I bought new fabric. I did sneak a recycled button placket in. The tie has pink beading.

Barbara G

This is one of my favorite pieces. I took the photo of my grandmother when I was in art school. I really pushed the stitching and used it to add color in the background. A Quilt National reject I am sure it is destined for greater things.

Girls in the Garden

I had this photo printed in black and white and it was too dark and depressing. I used the print as a pattern for the dresses, printed the faces on flowered fabric and added flowers to the hair. Nice save.

American Dream

I had this idea of doing patchwork which is not my strong suit. I admire people who can do flawless patchwork, corners matching, seams laying flat. It's about every red blooded American girl's dream of an all American horse.

Little David

This is what happens when you start to stitch and you get carried away. Fur! Little David is a pygmy goat that lives in the barn with my horse. I entered him in 4 shows and he was rejected. Ohio Craftsmen Best of 2016 accepted him and he won the Grand Prize!!! Persistence does pay.

My grandmother in the middle, the lime, black and white plaid fabric is an old tablecloth. The sun glasses remind us that our grannies were usually very hip.

Every once in a while I break out some felt and  my embellisher. Fun ensues and it is a lot of fun to add stitching to felt. The image is one I took of satyrs at the Cleveland Garden Center.

Marthas Wedding

This piece is a photo from my mothers album, it was marked Martha's Wedding, which makes me ask, were they baking for Martha? they were well dressed but wearing aprons. We'll never know but I had fun adding color to the aprons. The background is a graphic pattern but hidden in one square is a heart.

Hopalong and the Kid Sister

I was asked if I had a piece about growing up in Ohio, I was planning this piece so it fit perfectly. It is my brother Bob and I in the fifties. I was able to use some vintage fabrics, quilt pieces and worn blue jeans that I got at the thrift store. It was included in a show at the Ohio Decorative Arts Center along with pieces from the major museums in Ohio (Cleveland, Toledo, Columbus, Zanesville), living artists and lots of toys from the past 200 years. Truly an honor.

A Day at the Races

My great aunt Kitty presenting a trophy to a winning jockey. I thought I was pretty clever adding patchwork for his sleeves. My great uncle Jim was the owner of Fasig-Tipton auction house. They brokered race horses. Her dress is filled with hand embroidery.

Mom G

I was invited to participate in a show called Blind Date. The curator selected 6 writers and 6 artists, we submitted 3 images or 3 writings and the curator arranged sending writing to the artist and images to the writers. We then made new work from the submission. I was anxious about doing a piece from outside influence but upon reading the poem within an hour I had the idea. This is a photo of my grandmother I took in art school. I discovered that the stitching could greatly add to the image. There is loose green thread that mimics grass. The poem was about losing someone close and how that person longed to mow the grass. Poem by Julie Winters.

The Conversation

I purchased a Sweet Sixteen sit down long arm when I moved to my new house. It changed how I work, it was so easy to stitch the large pieces. This is the first piece I did on it. If I did this today it would be much different, more stitching for sure. It was juried into Quilt National and purchased by Jack Walsh.

It is made in two pieces that can be switched to show agreement or opposition. The patterned fabric at the top represents the conversation. It could be hung on an inside or outside corner.

The Bloopies

Sometimes I do different things. I took a kantha stitch class and started doing some kantha work, it reached its peak with this color study which was shown at the FAVA gallery. I love the look of white thread on black and the quick pops of color add interest. There was some cut work on this also.
